Here’s a recipe for my favourite caramelized onion rice. A deliciously rich, sweet rice which is nice paired with so many dishes.
How to make caramelized onion rice

1. Add oil to a large, non-stick pan and turn the heat to medium
2. Add sliced onions
3. Add sugar
4. Turn the heat to low and cook slowly for 15-20 minutes, stirring frequently
5. Until the onions are clear and caramelized, like this:
6. Add the cinnamon, then stir
7. Then add the dried rice
8. And water
9. Turn to the lowest heat and cover with a lid
10. Cook for 15 minutes, stirring after 10, until the water has evaporated and the rice cooked.
11. Once the rice is cooked, turn off the heat, and return the lid to the pan – leave to sit in its own steam for 10 minutes
Caramelized Onion Rice
Delicious caramelized onion rice made on the hob. This rice is sweet and delicious and perfect to pair with so many dishes.
Ingredients
- 1 Tbsp Oil
- 1 Large Chopped Onion
- 1 Tbsp Sugar
- 1 tsp Cinnamon
- 1 Cup Basmati Rice
- 1 + 1/2 Cup Water
Instructions
- Add oil to a large, non-stick pan
- Turn the heat to medium and add the chopped onion
- Add the sugar
- Stir and turn to low
- Cook on low for 20 minutes, stirring often, until the onions are sticky, clear and beginning to turn brown
- Add the cinnamon, stir and cook for a minute
- Then add the rice and water
- Place the pan on the lid and cook for 15 minutes, until the rice is cooked and water evaporated
- Check the rice after 5 minutes to make sure it's not sticking and there is enough water
- Stir, then replace the lid (if the rice isn't cooked yet - continue cooking with the lid on)
- If the rice is cooked, replace the lid and turn off the heat. Allow the rice to sit in the pan steaming in its own heat for 10 minutes further
- Serve
