Here’s my quick and easy recipe for fried chicken and gravy. The coating is made from seasonings, flour and egg meaning you can whip up a batch in no time. I chose to use paprika, garlic and cayenne to season my batter – but you can use your favorite spices, add some chilli, thyme, five spice or whatever you fancy – cooking is all about experimenting and finding the flavors you love!
Fried chicken is not complete without a great dipping sauce – and today we’re having it with southern style gravy from Mayfair – which is just like the gravy you get at KFC! The packaging looks like this:
The Mayfair Gravy is super quick and easy too (simply mix the gravy powder with cold water and boil for a couple of minutes). It tastes really similar to the KFC gravy – it has a distinct flavor of sage and garlic and costs just ÂŁ1 for a tub in home bargains and B&M.
Here’s the recipe for fried chicken – let me know how you get on in the comments below!
How To Make Fried Chicken & KFC Style Gravy At Home
- Slice the chicken breast into even strips.
- In a large bowl, sprinkle the chicken strips with 1 tsp each of paprika, cayenne, garlic powder and salt.
- Add 1 egg to the seasoned chicken and mix to coat the chicken with the egg mixture.
- To another large bowl, add the ‘batter’ ingredients and stir to mix.
- A few strips at a time, add the sticky chicken strips to the flour bowl and toss to coat completely in flour – repeat until all chicken strips are coated.
- Heat oil in a large pan to a medium heat, choose a deep pan – never fry in a shallow pan.
- When the oil is hot, add the chicken strips to the oil – id recommend you do this in batches to not overcrowd the pan and give yourself enough time to turn the chicken when needed.
- Turn the chicken after cooking for 5/6 minutes, and allow to cook on the other side for a further 5/6 minutes – until the coating is brown and the chicken is cooked through (slice one in half – it should be white throughout and juices run clear).
- Remove the chicken strips from the oil once cooked and drain any access oil with a paper towel.
- Serve with your favorite sides and enjoy! Today I served the chicken on a bed of lettuce with some Mayflower Southern Style gravy for dipping – delicious!
