I tried 3 the new Nandos Spicy Rice Bowl

This evening I popped over to Nandos to check out some of their new menu options. I have seen online that they have launched some new salads and bowls and wanted to see what all the hype was all about with them:

They each come with the choice of adding chicken or veggie ‘protein’ at an added cost. With added chicken, they come in at about the same price as a 1/4 chicken and 2 sides, and are cheaper than the burger or wrap options.

I have seen most of the hype on social media about the Caesar salad, but, despite loving Caesar salad, this isn’t something I fancy from Nandos when I can make a great one at home or pop to a local Italian restaurant for one.

So, I decided to order the spicy rice bowl. I often make rice bowls at home, and like the KFC one and this looked like an option Nandos should have had on their menu for years honestly – it just makes sense!

It has a generous portion of spicy rice, broccoli, slaw, cauliflower and hummus. If you add a chicken breast as I did, it comes in at 738kcals, which as a whole dish is fewer calories than a Fino pitta (without any sides) or any of their other wrap and burger options with sides. Not that you necessarily go to Nandos to weigh up calories, but it’s worth noting if this is something you do monitor.

All in all, I really enjoyed it and will likely order it again – the best part for me was the rice, hummus, and veggies. The chicken was a bit dry so I drenched it in sauce, next time I might choose halloumi or thighs instead. This was the rice bowl before I added any extra sauce:

The slaw was underwhelming but did add a nice crunch. The veggies were cooked nicely too – a bit of bite to them to contrast the soft hummus and chicken. I might order some pitta or garlic bread as a side next time if I was hungry, as I do love some additional carbs…
