CRIPSY CHILLI BEEF RECIPE

Crispy chilli beef is amongst the most popular Chinese dishes in the UK, alongside salt and pepper chicken, sweet and sour and crispy duck pancakes.

Here’s a simple recipe to create the sticky, crispy dish at home in less than half an hour!  Theres a two-step process to this recipe: first batter and fry your crispy beef, then create the sweet and sticky chilli sauce to coat the steak strips. This dish is perfect served on a bed of rice, or alongside some salt and pepper chips.

How To Make Crispy Shredded Beef At Home

Using a piece of kitchen roll, lightly pat the steak slices to remove any additional moisture – this will result in the crispest beef possible. Once you’ve patted the beef, slice thinly against the grain.

Heat 1 tsp of oil in a large, non-stick pan, then add the crushed ginger and garlic. Cook on low/medium heat for 1 minute, until fragrant.

Add the remaining sauce ingredients to a pan and cook on low/medium, simmering heat whilst you prepare the beef. The sauce will reduce down and cook gently whilst you prepare the rest of the meal.

Add the cornflour and five-spice to a bowl, and toss the thinly sliced steak pieces in the powder to coat.

Heat the vegetable/sunflower oil in a large pan, until hot, then add the steak slices and fry until crispy – roughly 2 minutes. If your pan is quite small, then add the steak in two batches as to not overcrowd the pan.

Remove the cooked, crispy beef from the hot oil and allow to rest briefly on some kitchen roll to soak up any additional oil.

By this time, your sauce should be thick and bubbling in the other pan – thick enough to coat the back of a spoon.

Add the crispy beef to the sticky sauce, turn off the heat, and stir to coat.

Serve with your favorite sides – sticky rice, salt and pepper chips or noodles.

This is an ace recipe, just like a takeaway! I made it with cauliflower and mushrooms as I’m veggie, the only tweak was to add a little water to the flour & five spice mix to bind it to the vegetables. It comes out amazingly well.

This great recipe is definitely worthy of the Actifry at Step 5. Probably very doable without the optional Actifry snack basket. *****
